The 60th edition of the Cannes Film Festival honoured GAUTAMAN BHASKARAN with a Gold Medallion in recognition of his work as a movie critic.
The President of the Festival, Gilles Jacob, said while presenting the award on May 24 2007 that this prize was not as much a reward for the number of years one has come to Cannes as it was for talent and merit.
The Head of Press at Cannes, Christine Aime, described the Gold Medallion as the Palm D'Or for Journalists.
Bhaskaran was the only journalist from India to have been given this trophy.
Twenty-nine other critics from among 4300 present at Cannes were also honoured.
Bhaskaran has been covering Cannes for 15 years now without a break. He has also been attending other major film festivals, such as Venice, Berlin, Tokyo, Montreal, Deauville, Dubai, New Delhi and Goa.
He has served on the jury in New Delhi, Melbourne and Deauville among others.
Currently, he is writing a book on India's only living auteur-movie director, Adoor Gopalakrishanan, under a Ford Foundation Fellowship. (Webposted June 19 2007)
